ProfileSomacho
This is the only velvet weaver in Nishijin, the birthplace of Japanese velvet.
The first owner, Soma Chotaro, who became independent as a velvet merchant in 1933 , gained the trust of customers by using techniques that prevented the pile from flattening, and began distributing kimono coats and shawls nationwide.
The second-generation owner, Shoji Soma, continued to produce fabrics that were presented by famous designers at the Paris Collection, incorporating elaborate weave designs. He also succeeded in producing Japan's first polyester cosmetic puff fabric, and the company continues to hold the top share of the domestic velvet puff fabric market.
