With a history stretching back 1400 years, Kawamata Town in Fukushima Prefecture once produced silk fabrics known as the "best silk in the Orient." This extravagant dress is made from organza dyed by the Hon-Aizome-Masao Workshop, which has been embossed with Kawamata Silk, known as the "thinnest silk fabric in the world," to create a three-dimensional effect.

ProfileIndigo dyeing studio

The dye "sukumo" made by fermenting indigo leaves for 100 days is dissolved in lye from hardwood and fermented in a large jar with bran, sweet potato , lime, lye , and sake for several days. The dye is then repeatedly dyed in the liquid. This technique, called "natural lye fermentation indigo dyeing, " was devised to allow indigo dyeing all year round in Japan, a country with four seasons. At Masumi Kobo , we are committed to preserving this "natural lye fermentation indigo dyeing" technique, which has been used since the Edo period, in Kyoto. We are also researching how we can utilize the hidden power of indigo in the recycling society that our predecessors have built up over many years.
